Turkey, A Perfect Recipe

Turkey, A Perfect Recipe

Turkey, perfect meal for friends and family. We love it. The secret for us and most others is to keep it moist. We do that by turning it on its back for the last hour of cooking. Our stuffing includes celery, onions, pecans, dried cranberries, sage, bread crumbs, and a secret ingredient that is different for each family. This is one bird that while ugly of form truely spreads joy for all. Great for hearty apitites and lovers of commity and fellowship and dining. A true feast to share andt to be thankful for. Here's a few turkey poems to help celebrate.

A Thanksgiving Alphabet

T...Turkeys, tablespreads, being together,
H...Happiness and homes to protect us from all weather,
A...Aunts and uncles, a reunion in Fall,
N...Nieces and nephews, family members all!
K...Kind-hearted kin coming over for dinner,
S...Surely you'll have fun, but you won't get thinner!
G...Gourds and pumpkins, mouths open wide.
I...Indians and Pilgrims we remember with pride.
V...Very special times-there could even be snow.
I...Imagine what it was like at Plymouth long ago.
N...Never forget how the settlers led the way,
G...Giving thanks and blessing this special day.

All in a Word by Aileen Fisher
T for time to be together, turkey, talk, and tangy weather.
H for harvest stored away, home, and hearth, and holiday.
A for autumn's frosty art, and abundance in the heart.
N for neighbors, and November, nice things, new things to remember.
K for kitchen, kettles' croon, kith and kin expected soon.
S for sizzles, sights, and sounds, and something special that abounds.
That spells - THANKS - for joy in living and a jolly good Thanksgiving.

Day 159/365 - Whats for Lunch

Day 159/365 - Whats for Lunch

Your probably wondering what is this? Well last night my roommate dom and i took a trip down to food 4 less. i been trying to cut down on the carbs so i was looking for things i could make for the next day. I can't stand vegetables and i get sick of foods very easy. I saw these turkey sausages on sale so i picked up a couple. I also saw some bacon on sale so in los angeles flicrkr member style i was going to make some bacon wrapped sausage. The turkey sausage wasn't as good as i thought it was going to be but still made a pretty good meal. While the meal didn't contain much carbs im sure it was packed with calories. I also went with a couple of friends to see haunting in Connecticut. Yeah it was pretty bad. It had a few good scares but not worth the 9 dollars i had to pay to get in. bleh

A Weight Loss Plan For YOU - Because You Like To Eat At Fast Food Restaurants

A Weight Loss Plan For YOU - Because You Like To Eat At Fast Food Restaurants

Everyone knows that there really is no "one size fits all" for anything ... and certainly not a weight loss plan or method! If you've been trying for very long to lose those few (or not so few) extra pounds, then you likely have tried many diets ... most unsuccessfully.

Diets don't work for many reasons ... but one of the main reasons is because the system just isn't YOU! It doesn't work with YOUR personality, YOUR lifestyle or YOUR budget. Or maybe it just involves too much food preparation, too many foods you don't like or can't afford, or maybe too many restrictions without enough exceptions.

Based on the diets you have tried in the past, you probably now have a pretty good idea of what would be a good fit for you. YOU know your lifestyle, YOU know your food preferences (or non-preferences) and YOU know what kind of time or money you have available to allocate to your dieting efforts.

And you also know your weaknesses ... which is really what causes dieters to fail. Everyone has at least one "weakness" that always seems to trip up their attempts at losing weight. What is yours?

"One size fits all" diets can't focus on any one particular "issue" so you are left without any guidance as you try to deal with whatever it is that consistently causes you problems in losing and keeping the weight off.

Not anymore!

A Weight Loss Plan For YOU - Because You Like To Eat At Fast Food Restaurants is all about helping people like you who have trouble losing weight because your lifestyle involves a lot of fast food dining. Everything is written and presented with the fast-food dieter in mind.

The first part of this book will give you tips on how to eat at fast food places ... when, what, why, how much, etc. Then we'll discuss some exercise options and recommendations ... giving you tips and suggestions to get you exercising in order to make your weight loss efforts more noticeable (but it's not as bad as you might think!) And then we'll go into some mindset motivational tips designed just for the person who eats out or on-the-go a lot ... little things that can make a huge difference in your results.

The second part of the book is where we pull it all together. Regardless of how you choose to approach losing weight, there are some tips and suggestions that will help any dieter be able to reach that seemingly unattainable goal. Things that will help you get on track and stay on track, things that will help you know what to expect and be prepared so you don't lose your focus, and things that will help you know what to do when you do slip up and start to lose sight of your purpose.

Losing weight is a battle that YOU can win ... with the right approach. Sometimes all it takes is just looking at things from a slightly different perspective ... something that most diet books and programs forget all about.

Choose a diet plan that fits YOU like a glove and you will be further along the pathway to success than ever before.

Scroll up ... and click on the "Buy Now" button to receive almost instant delivery of this book to your Kindle or other reading device. You'll be glad you did!

Ta-Ta Tonsils!

Ta-Ta Tonsils!

Taken with a Nikon D80.

* Exposure: 0.003 sec (1/320) [+]
* Aperture: f/8 [+]
* Focal Length: 170 mm [+]
* ISO Speed: 250 [+]

Strobist: SB-800 and SB-600 Strapped to the lens with the lens extended to the 200mm setting. Attached with ball bungees with each flash on opposite side. This created a pseudo ring light appearance. Since I had Becky take the photo, I set the flashes to TTL. Triggered via pop up flash via Nikon CLS/AWS. Shutter speed set to 1/320 to eliminate any reflection directly from pop up flash. f/8 chosen for greater depth of field. ISO was left at 250.

For some time I had worsening halitosis (bad breath), pocket of my tonsils, food accumulation, snoring, and calcifications. I saw the ENT surgeon, Dr. McDonald at the Mayo Clinic a couple of months ago. We decided to proceed with tonsillectomy. My patient schedule was filled out for 2 months so I blocked my schedule and on 4/23/08 I underwent tonsillectomy.

After not eating or drinking after midnight, I showed up around 8 am to the hospital. I was escorted to an outpatient room and changed into hospital attire (Snaps in the back!). A young female IV tech came in and after a few seconds of prodding with a needle, my IV was in. The nursing staff was excellent and friendly. They hung an IV and took vitals. The scale they weighed me on-- IT LIES! :-)

I was then taken to the pre-anesthesia room. Assessed multiple times (spell your full name and what is your birthday) and confirmed what surgery I was having, things were a go. The anesthesiologist and a CRNA came and saw me and the CRNA rolled me to the OR. I was transferred to the OR table. Dr. McDonald came over to say hi. They hooked up my IV. I remember having the thought of "I wonder if I can see the propofol flowing down the IV into my arm". That was my last thought and I started coming awake in the PACU (recovery room). I had been intubated and extubated while I was asleep (hallelujah!). I consciously tried to breathe deeply and wiggle my hands and legs to try and recover as fast as possible from anesthesia. I kept on catching myself wanting to close my eyes and go back to sleep, but I forced myself to stay awake with the goal of recovering and going home. I needed a shot of pain medication in the recovery room (fentanyl). They switched my nose cannula of oxygen to a face mask of oxygen and moisture. I believe the Lord blessed me with a quick recovery, a successful surgery and blessed Dr. McDonald in performing the operation.

I was rolled back up to the semi-private outpatient room (2 person room). After being assessed by the nursing staff, my IV was removed. I quickly changed out of my hospital clothes into some loose fitting basketball pants. Becky waited in the room for me while I got ready. We went down to pickup my medications (narcotic - oxycodone in liquid form, antibiotic - amoxicllin) which it took the pharmacy an HOUR to fill. I fell asleep in the wheelchair. Becky pushed me in the wheelchair to the parking ramp and I climbed in the car. We picked the kids up 1/2 hour early from school and headed home. I proceeded to vomit once from being nauseous, took my first dose of oxycodone, and then went to be bed for an hour nap. I got up and took some tylenol. Drank some water and had a bit of jello. I promptly threw that up too with water coming out my nose! Ugh!

I drank lots of water and managed to keep down some jello. I ate a jello cup with mandarin oranges in it. That was a mistake--they burned the back of my throat! After that and for the rest of the night, I felt nauseous. After going to bed at 10, I got up to urinate at 12. Boy was it every slow, I think I was still affected by anesthesia and the narcotic. I got up again at 2 to urinate. I got clammy and cold and threw water up. I got up at 3 to urinate and couldn't sleep, so I read for 45 minutes. I went back to sleep and got up at 5:55. I drank some water and promptly threw it up along with the mandarin oranges from last night. After that, I haven't thrown up since--must have been those that didn't set well with me. It hurts to swallow more than a couple of times in a row. Consequently, I find myself not swallowing much. I've had a ton of water, some Lipton diet citrus green tea and bits of jello (Becky blended some bananas with some different varieties of jello for me) and yogurt. I will lose weight yet! :-)

I took a nap in the morning and a nap this evening as well. I thought I'd share this photo of the back of my throat to show you what things looked like. Carl.

Pray for Tigger

Pray for Tigger

Tigger has been my cat for three years. I began taking care of him when he lived in Sugar Mill Gardens and I noticed the heat and weather extremes were taking a toll on his health. I took Tig in before a tropical storm that hit in August of 2008, and he's been with me ever since.

It almost seems ironic that we're in the path of a bad storm now, Irene, that will most likely miss us, but will cause a lot of damage wherever it lands, and Tigger is taking a bit of a bad turn. Lately, he has been losing a great deal of weight quickly, so quickly in fact that when I stopped and looked at him last night, lying on his pillow, I realized something's really wrong. I've been working 60-74 hour weeks for the last month, so I hadn't really noticed that he was getting as thin as he was. While posting these photos of him, it hit me that he's not doing well.

Tigger eats a lot. He always has had a fast metabolism, but he still is dropping weight. He's also scratching himself a lot, and has no fleas. He could have liver or kidney issues, and I am having trouble getting time off to get him into the vet. If I'd been here longer, I would just take a day, but I'm new, and can't afford to risk my job. So, I'm hoping I can drop tig off at the vet tomorrow, and that they can run some tests on him to see what's wrong. I won't be able to pick him up probably until the next day. With a hurricane off our coast, that may not be feasible, either. I don't want him alone and scared, but I need to get him help fast!

Please pray that Tigger will stop losing weight and muscle mass, and that we can find out what is wrong and help him as soon as possible. While you're at it, if you could pray that the storm stays far away from the Florida coast, I'd be grateful!

I'll let everyone know about Tigger's progress. He is his usual, talky self, and eats like he's starving, but just keeps losing. This has happened before, but not in such a quick amount of time, and not such a drastic loss.

Thanks for your prayers.

Chris

I just looked at a site called "Cat World" and the info on there suggests that this is diabetes. I can't imagine Tigger allowing anyone to give him shots daily, so please, DO PRAY!

Gerascophobia (Close-Up 2)

Gerascophobia (Close-Up 2)

“Gerascophobia” is an exploration of self-identity, linked to the value of ‘youth’ and how we perceive ourselves as it slips away. Though I’m only 22, a combination of genetics, extreme weight-loss and the long-term use of Methotrexate (a chemotherapy drug) has caused my hairline to recede to a point where I feel older than most men in their mid 30s. It has caused me to become conscious of time, to evaluate people, not on the basis of who they are, but rather, who they are likely to become…and to shave my head.

We should embrace what we cannot change.

Gut Feelings: From Fear And Despair To Health And Hope

Carnie Wilson's story is a journey from the darkness of a lifelong struggle with emotional rejection, compulsive eating, and morbid obesity into the light of health. Born the daughter of pop music royalty (Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys) and gifted with her own talents that brought fame and fortune, she came to feel that none of this mattered. She would never be whole and happy until she achieved a healthy weight and body image. Carnie's story has inspired millions of morbidly obese people worldwide and she has become a symbol of hope to those who suffer from the stigma, pain and dread that this affliction visits upon its victims.

A blend of rambling biography and encouraging success story, Gut Feelings will take you right into the nitty-gritty of Carnie Wilson's life and the mysteries of gastric bypass surgery. If you think a similar surgery may be in your future, there is a lot to learn from this book--Wilson presents the gory details unflinchingly, and separate appendices from four specialists address more general questions and answers. Wilson's casual tone and conversational asides will make you feel like you're getting to know a new friend; that is, a new friend with a roller-coaster life and a habit of using curses as adjectives. She's frank and animated, with no real illusions about her strengths and weaknesses, but the repeat discussions of matter-of-fact drug use may distract some readers from the real story. Ultimately, the surgery is an interesting success, and professionals in health-related fields, as well as prospective patients, may find the specifics of one person's experience useful. --Jill Lightner

Caesar: Life of a Colossus

As Adrian Goldsworthy writes in the introduction to this book, ?in his fifty-six years, Caesar was at times many things, including a fugitive, prisoner, rising politician, army leader, legal advocate, rebel, dictator . . . as well as husband, father, lover and adulterer.” In this landmark biography, Goldsworthy examines all of these roles and places his subject firmly within the context of Roman society in the first century B.C.

Tracing the extraordinary trajectory of Caesar’s life from birth through assassination, Goldsworthy covers not only Caesar’s accomplishments as charismatic orator, conquering general, and powerful dictator but also lesser-known chapters during which he was high priest of an exotic cult, captive of pirates, seducer not only of Cleopatra but also of the wives of his two main political rivals, and rebel condemned by his own country. Ultimately, Goldsworthy realizes the full complexity of Caesar’s character and shows why his political and military leadership continues to resonate some two thousand years later.

100/365 - Honey Mustard

100/365 - Honey Mustard

I haven't posted in a while - just got back from holiday and trying to catch up on photos. I had grand dreams of my day 100 photo, but in many ways I think this is appropriate - it's a testament to the fact that things don't always work out as planned :)

We missed our connection in Dulles, but not for lack of trying. One of those airport experiences where everyone else is moving in slow motion, and I'm tearing through the airport, running over little kids, stepping on elderly women, all to get to the gate which closed about 4 minutes before we got there. Argh.

But as always, we made the best of it - we got some food, hung out at a pub (excuse me - bar), and had a great time. So this became the photo for day 100 - a french fry, honey mustard dip, and a half thing of ranch.

I'm happy I made it this far in the project - 100 days! Giddyup!

Home Cooking: Honey Mustard and Onion ''Boccaci-agel" Cut.

Home Cooking: Honey Mustard and Onion ''Boccaci-agel" Cut.

This bread is what I made to ''christian'' my new pizza stone setup. Since I used a combination of All-purpose, bread and a small amount of durum flours, it came out pretty darn dense. Almost like a bagel. I was also aiming for a ''honey mustard and onion'' flavoring so I added those ingredients which made the dough even *more* moist and heavy and required me to add more flour to compensate. You get the idea.

It came out more like a bagel than a focaccia (even though I brushed it down pretty generously with extra-virgin). So I decided to name my creation ''Bocaccia-gel''. The resulting is bread less than specatular, but the bake and oven spring on this puppy was great. The baking condition of my oven has increased 10-fold and I am confident if I followed tried and true recipes I should be able to bake some very good breads!
